AMERICAN PICTURES (1994--1997)
I took one black and white photography course my last semester of college. I had always taken pictures but only in color--and color was always more appealing to me.
After college I did a series of road trips. One lasted five weeks and took me around the Northeastern US--Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, New York, Massachusetts. I stopped for a photo workshop at the Maine Photographic Workshops for part of that time. Arnold Newman actually came by for a lobster dinner with everyone but I didn't even know who he was.
The other road trip I did took me through the Southwest and lasted about 9 months.
Between college and graduate school I traveled and lived in different places. The images in this set are from different locales around America--many from the West, some from the Northeast, and some are from my home region of the Midwest.
I consider them all to be American documents.
